When Olivia woke up the day after Thanksgiving with a pounding headache and a nauseous stomach, she groaned as she tried to sit up. She was in Brock’s bed, but she remembered the night before how he’d set her up in his bedroom before taking the couch for himself. She’d had one too many beers the night before—or a few too many.

She groaned again, the world spinning around her. She wasn’t a big drinker most of the time, but her disastrous Thanksgiving dinner with her parents had made her want to drink from the moment she arrived at Brock’s apartment.

“Great. Now I’ve poisoned myself. What a way to make myself feel better,” Olivia griped to herself as she swung her legs out of bed and padded into the kitchen to get herself a glass of water.

As she left the bedroom, she found Brock lounging on the sofa with a book in his hand looking very smug and annoyingly unaffected by the beers he’d also been drinking. He grinned at Olivia as she entered the room.

“Well, good morning, party animal. How’s the head?”

“Pounding,” Olivia muttered as she headed over to the sink. “Why do you seem fine?”

“Ah, well, you know, everything in moderation. You ready to hit the Black Friday sales?”

“Get lost.”

Brock cackled, and Olivia raised a smile as she fetched her glass of water. She had to admit, the worst Thanksgiving of her life had turned out to be not so bad after she arrived at Brock’s place. He definitely made her feel better. He didn’t push her to talk about what had happened that day at all, and she didn’t try to tell him. They kicked back on the couch and watched a movie until Olivia was too tipsy to concentrate. Then, they chatted for a few hours, watching the crate of beers turn into a pile of empty cans. By the time Brock put her to bed, she was drunk enough to forget about the day she’d had, but not so drunk as to forget how good Brock had made her feel.

She felt herself blushing at the thought. Once again, she felt like she wanted to put her feelings on hold for a while. They were getting a little too close to comfort. Sure, she was still technically off duty, and the case could wait one more day in that regard, but with everything going on with her family, she wanted to put Brock at a distance for just a little longer.

“Hey, Olivia?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for hanging out with me last night. I wasn’t going to admit it, but I was pretty bummed out when I found out you’d be going to your parents.”

“Oh, I knew.”

Brock gave a sheepish grin. “I guess I wasn’t exactly subtle about the fact. But I didn’t say anything because I knew that you had to go. I knew you had to see if you could sort things out with them. But selfish as it is, I’m glad I got to see you. You gave me the best Thanksgiving I’ve had in a really long time.
